Lesson FAQ
What is your teaching philosophy?
I cater my teaching to meet the needs and interests of each individual student. I believe that students at all levels need a solid foundation. To that end, I will suggest etudes and repertoire, recommend fingerings and bowings, make phrasing suggestions, etc. Ultimately, I strive to get the student to a point where they are able to be self sufficient.
What method do you use for teaching?
I grew up with a version of the Suzuki method and have been trained in the teaching of Suzuki Violin Book 1. While I agree with many aspects of the Suzuki method, I believe that a combination of that and more traditional teaching methods is most effective for musical and technical development.
What is the parent's role?
Parent involvement may vary with age of child. Parents are encouraged to monitor practice at home to ensure progress, particularly for younger students.
How long are lessons?
I offer 30 or 60 minute lessons. Prefered length of lesson depends on age and ability of student. Lessons are typically weekly, but if my schedule allows I may also offer bi-weekly lessons.
Do you prefer a specific payment method?
Check or Venmo is preferable and payment will be due on a monthly basis at the first lesson of every month. Unless it’s an emergency, I require 24 hours notice for cancelled or rescheduled lessons otherwise the lesson will be charged as normal. In the case of a cancelled lesson, it’s to the student’s benefit that the lesson be rescheduled and I will try my best to accommodate. Please keep in mind that in addition to teaching I lead an active performing career with a busy schedule; tuition does not pay for your lesson time, but time I have reserved for you.
What other expenses will there be?
Students are expected to have their own, well maintained instrument. This may require the purchase of strings, rosin, any other necessary maintenance. I’d be happy to assist in these matters. Students will also be expected to purchase music and bring it, in addition to a pencil and metronome/tuner, to each lesson.
